Ten Commandments for remodeling

1)  Only use licensed and insured contractors.

  • Protect your legal rights

2)  Talk to different companies when researching a project.

  • Understand their experience and processes as well as price

3)  Check subcontractor references as well as customers.

  • Does he have long standing relationships with his contractors

4)  Make sure that the contractor and you are in tune about the project.

  • Do you communicate well?

5)  Make sure the contract spells out what is to be done for how much and when.

  • A clear contract makes life easier.

6)  Don’t be pressured into signing anything.

  • Make sure you get your questions answered.  The deal offered today should be there tomorrow.

7)  Make sure that the homes structural integrity won’t be changed
      without proper engineering.

  • Long term problems can occur if the remodel does not respect the structure.

8)  Plan on being inconvenienced.

  • Remodeling disrupts lives for a time, take this in stride, but if there is a problem, talk to your contractor about it.

9)  Get all appropriate permits and approvals.

  • Doing a project without a permit is illegal and may cause you serious problems when you sell or have a problem that needs to be resolved.

10) Check that the work is done properly.

  • Inspect what you expect.  Ask questions. If you need to, call in an independent inspector.
