Ten Commandments for remodeling
1) Only use licensed and insured contractors.
- Protect your legal rights
2) Talk to different companies when researching a project.
- Understand their experience and processes as well as price
3) Check subcontractor references as well as customers.
- Does he have long standing relationships with his contractors
4) Make sure that the contractor and you are in tune about the project.
- Do you communicate well?
5) Make sure the contract spells out what is to be done for how much and when.
- A clear contract makes life easier.
6) Don’t be pressured into signing anything.
- Make sure you get your questions answered. The deal offered today should be there tomorrow.
7) Make sure that the homes structural integrity won’t be changed
without proper engineering.
- Long term problems can occur if the remodel does not respect the structure.
8) Plan on being inconvenienced.
- Remodeling disrupts lives for a time, take this in stride, but if there is a problem, talk to your contractor about it.
9) Get all appropriate permits and approvals.
- Doing a project without a permit is illegal and may cause you serious problems when you sell or have a problem that needs to be resolved.
10) Check that the work is done properly.
- Inspect what you expect. Ask questions. If you need to, call in an independent inspector.
